Each school term, we focus on one of our four value statements. This may be through the messages we communicate with our students, the cultural events that are run, and through the various opportunities that invite a student response.

This term our Service Prefects are providing one such opportunity. Recently we had the privilege of having special guest Warrant Officer Class 2 John Roxburgh attend our Mueller ANZAC Day Service. His address was deeply personal and gave great insight into the very real sacrifice and personal cost that is paid by our servicemen and women, specifically our commandos, as they serve in the Australian military.

Many were moved from his message, and so our student body decided to act. They organised to have WO2 John Roxburgh visit us again this week, to share in more detail what the specific needs are and ongoing support required is, for those commandos injured and unable to continue on in military service. Such needs and support can be costly and ongoing.

Our Term Two value statement reads; Everyone Belongs and can Contribute to Community. We believe our community exists here in the Mueller College school community, in the wider Redcliffe community, but also beyond each of these. Each year our students are involved in cross-cultural mission trips to serve and contribute to various communities abroad. We believe we are called to contribute where there are needs, and opportunities to help with the resources we ourselves have been blessed with. We believe it is part of our responsibility as members of a community.

Philippians 2:4 reads; “Let each of you look not only to his own needs, but also to the needs of others.”

This term our student body will be looking to fundraise money that can be used directly to aid and support the needs of a military family in the greater Brisbane community. Money raised will go towards physical renovations needed at the family home of an injured commando and his family. On Tuesday 5th June in week eight, students will be invited to participate in a ‘Wear your Colours Day’. A jersey, shirt, cap or socks can be worn to school for the day accompanied by a gold coin donation. Footy food (hotdogs, pies, chips and pizza) will be on sale that week with monies from sales contributing to the fundraising cause. More information will be sent out soon regarding these fundraisers.

Service prefects will be looking at other additional ways the students at Mueller College can practically show support and give assistance and hope to this family, and others throughout the remainder of the year. Opportunities for our students to look beyond the needs of themselves, and to the needs of others. Opportunities for our students to find belonging through the contribution to the community that exists in and beyond the Mueller school gate.
