Mueller College has been given the opportunity to participate in a light aircraft build sponsored by the Sport Aircraft Association of Australia (SAAA). The build will take place over approximately 9 months in association with 3 other schools across the country, each building their designated piece before they are assembled as a whole by the SAAA. The final completed aircraft will be displayed at the annual SAAA fly in, Ausfly, in April 2021, and later used as a training aircraft by the students who built it (meaning they have a vested interest in its durability!).

15 Mueller students will be joined weekly by mentors from the SAAA to construct the wing of the Vans RV12 aircraft, a plane worth approximately $120000. The wing will be assembled in the school Aerospace workshop under the supervision and scrutinization of the 4 mentors who will assure the workmanship of the students. The school has invested in aircraft specific tools to be able to accomplish the build and are grateful to the local chapter of the SAAA who kindly donated $500 toward expenses.

The parts from Oregon, USA arrived last week ready for the official start date of the build on August 5th. As an Aerospace Gateway school it is a great accomplishment for Mueller to be chosen to be part of the first SAAA Sponsored Youth Aircraft Build and Fly Project. Our hope is that the students’ passion for aviation will be fanned as they engage in the exciting project.
