Queensland is known as the ‘Sunshine State’. Beautiful one day, perfect the next.

As we move into term 4, we move towards summer and warmer days. For lots of us, this means an increase in outdoor activities like the pool and beach.

Unfortunately, Australia has one of the highest rates of skin cancer in the world with 2 out of 3 people diagnosed with skin cancer by the age of 70. The ultraviolet radiation (UV) from the sun can cause sunburn, skin damage, eye damage, and skin cancer. UV radiation isn’t felt in the sunlight or heat so it is not always easy to realise how much damage is being done, even on a cool day. UV levels are at their highest during the hours of a school day. To ensure protection from this it is always important to be SUN SMART.

The Cancer Councils Slip, Slop, Slap, Seek, Slide is a simple and effective way to protect yourself and your children from sun damage. Having the sun-safety conversation as a family and adopting a SunSmart approach to any outdoor activities is the easiest way to prevent sun cancer and other damage from the sun.

Please see attached “Make Sid the Seagull SunSmart”. If any students would like to complete and bring to the health room, we will display them.
