Year 9 Extension Science had some fun in the lab this week as they turned their hands to mythbusting. In groups, the class had to research, design, and conduct an experiment to investigate a common myth.

One group sought to prove that pop-rocks could not actually make the human stomach explode. Another explored the best citrus to use for invisible ink. A group of boys had the most explosive result when they measured how many rubber bands it takes before a watermelon bursts. In this case, it was 837! It took over an hour for the team to apply the bands one by one and, thinking they were going to have to go home without finishing their project, the melon burst seconds before the final bell of the day. (However, the Primaries were already finished and those leaving school in the direction of the labs got to witness the blast!)
