Year 12 students Kasiah Salisnew and Beth Drury have recently completed school-based traineeships and received Certificate III in Health Services Assistance and Health Services Support, respectively. The qualifications took them just over a year to complete as they went to get practical experience one day per week at the Redcliffe Hospital.

Kasiah says she had always had an ambition to work in health care, and the traineeship gave her an opportunity to apply her studies in a hands-on environment, getting a taste of the work to figure out if she would continue to pursue the field further. Kasiah rotated through different departments every three months, getting experience in the dementia, Alzheimer’s and falls ward, the COVID ward, paediatrics and maternity. She has now landed herself a job as an AIN (Assistant in Nursing) at the hospital in her favourite ward and plans to continue to study nursing at university next year.

Beth spent time in surgical, general medicine and maternity departments, helping to support the nurses by showering, toileting and feeding patients, holding and changing babies and prepping bottles. She also now has a job at the hospital in maternity and aims to continue studying at university next year to become a NICU nurse and midwife. She says the traineeship was a wonderful opportunity to build relationships at the hospital and was pivotal in getting her job.

All of this while maintaining their other schoolwork and extra-curricular activities! Congratulations to the girls on a fantastic achievement!
