We recognise that approaching the halfway mark of a school term can sometimes bring a period of increased stress for students and families. With academic, social and emotional pressures building, it is important for you as parents and carers to be aware of what supports exist at Mueller College. This article will also provide some signs to look for if you are concerned about your child.
It’s normal for children and teenagers to have ups and downs. However, if you notice the following signs persisting for at least two weeks and they are impacting your child’s daily functioning, it may be beneficial to seek further support. These might be:
*Persistent changes in mood, behaviour, or social interactions, such as increased sadness, irritability, or withdrawal.
*Difficulties with sleeping or eating patterns.
*A noticeable decline in academic performance/motivation.
*Exhibiting behaviours that are out of character for your child.
*Physical complaints, such as stomach aches or headaches (particularly for young children), that are not explained by a medical condition.
How to Access Support at Mueller College
It is best to contact your child’s teacher and/or Year Level Coordinator in the first instance, particularly if your child is struggling academically. Your child’s teachers will then be able to make any necessary adjustments for your child. Additionally, students can access further pastoral support from chaplains and school nurses, as well as mental health support from the school counsellors. Contact details are below:
School Nurses: The easiest way to contact the school nurses is to attend the Health Room, located on the corner of A block.
Chaplains: For chaplaincy support, please contact Alan Kregenbrink (a.kregrenbrink@mueller.qld.edu.au) or Naomi Kusic (n.kusic@mueller.qld.edu.au). Our chaplains provide pastoral support to both students and families from Prep to Year 12.
Counsellors: For counselling support, parents are welcome to email Mrs Ebony Harmer or Mr. Anthony Ryan at counsellor@mueller.qld.edu.au. The counsellors can conduct an intake session with you to understand your family’s needs and help connect you with the most appropriate support, whether commencing counselling at school for your child or initiating appropriate referrals to external services.
All of our pastoral care staff at Mueller College are here to support students and families through the tough times they might experience.
