Book Week is here! What a wonderful opportunity to celebrate characters, stories and the powerful messages that books can bring into our lives.
Books can take us on adventures, introduce us to people and places we may never encounter, teach us important lessons and help us see the world through someone else’s eyes. As a Christian school community, Book Week also gives us an opportunity to celebrate a book that sits at the very heart of who we are — the Bible.
When I was a girl, we sang a simple song at Sunday School:
The B-I-B-L-E,
Yes, that’s the book for me!
I stand alone on the Word of God,
The B-I-B-L-E!
Those simple words carry an important truth. The Bible is not simply another good book on our shelves. It is God’s Word to us.
What a privilege we have as parents, teachers and a school community to share the Bible with our children and help them discover its stories, wisdom and truth.
God’s Word encourages us when we are discouraged. It equips us to live with wisdom and courage. It invites us into relationship with God. It convicts us when we need to change direction. It challenges us to love others, forgive, serve and live differently. And it comforts us when life is difficult.
Hebrews 4:12 reminds us:
“For the word of God is alive and active.”
Our hope is that our students will not only hear the Bible at school, but will learn to read it, know it, trust it and live it. We want them to understand that God’s Word has something to say into their friendships, their choices, their worries, their hopes and the people they are becoming.
So, as we celebrate all things books this Book Week, may we also encourage our children to open the greatest book of all.
There are many wonderful books for our children to discover, but there is one book we hope will shape their hearts and lives for years to come.
The B-I-B-L-E — that’s the book for me!
