One of my greatest regrets in life is not persisting in learning to play piano. At my local high school, I was the first Year Eight boy to top Music as a subject. I remember aceing one of my practical tests – playing the recorder! I started piano lessons, but any natural giftings were soon lost because of my disinterest and lack of dedication. How I wish I could play the piano now.
What will you do with what you have? was the question asked of all Mueller Secondary students at the start of the 2026 school year. Displayed on the Mueller wall, it was seen by them as they filled the college square on the first day of school. It is a question that is re-asked each new term in the hope and with a confidence, that many will respond to through contribution or an act of service for the community to which they belong.
The Apostle Paul in one of his letters of encouragement to the early Christian communities across the provinces of Asia Minor, wrote these words in 1 Peter; “Each of you should use whatever gifts you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace in its various forms.” It is a directive which provides the answer to the question above.
While the Fete and Secondary Musical of recent weeks bore witness to a significant number of individuals stewarding their gifts and talents to serve our community, there have been so many more opportunities taken by students throughout the year.
Regular weekly school programs such as Breakfast club, Chapel teams, Primary discipleship, and Student leadership, have been supported by other service ventures such as World’s Greatest Shave, SU chaplaincy service days, Primary coaching and refereeing, Worship Tours, Dads and Sons State of Origin night, Mother’s Day stall, Beanies for Brain Cancer week, and the upcoming Girl’s Night, Father’s Day stall, Vanuatu and Kenya mission trips.
It has been such a joy to see students doing great things with what they have. Some have used their time, others their passions, gifts and abilities, others have used their resources and finances, while others still their initiative to serve and bless those around them. And to not only those within the Mueller community, but those beyond the school gate as well. It is what contributes to Mueller being such an amazing place.
