2020 sees the introduction of a Certificate II in Kitchen Operations available to Year 10 students. This is a nationally accredited program that students are able to complete on-site in the Mueller kitchen during school time. Seven of our students have embarked on an application process, through an interview and trial, to do a Traineeship – effectively being paid one day a week to go to school!
The new Certificate can be used as the beginning of a learning pathway that leads to a Cert. III in Hospitality in Year 11, and then a Cert. III in Events in Year 12. Students who choose to pursue this line of training can potentially leave school with three awards under their belt making them qualified to step into a Cookery apprenticeship. With the skills and training they’ve accumulated they will be confident to immerse themselves in the industry.
Whilst training, students wear a full uniform to get them in the mindset of a working, professional kitchen. They have the opportunity to complete both internal and external kitchen functions, building front of house and back of house skills that are directly applicable to the industry. Their teachers, Mark Boundy and David Scherer, have almost 20 years experience in training and teaching between them, in both school’s and RTO’s, and are passionate about training and releasing their students.
We can’t wait to see where the new Certificate takes our Cookery students!
