If you’ve visited the library lately, you will have found a new corner of wonder lovingly created for our students. The library manager, Mrs Richens, had a vision for a cosy spot for children to foster their love of books, and together with her husband Ben, ‘The Reading Tree’ was brought to life. They researched a lot of other libraries, watched lots of videos about making trees, and though none were quite what they wanted, they collected ideas and made them our own.

During the last school holidays, the Richens’ were here working on the tree eight to ten hours a day for twelve days straight (though rumour has it Mr Richens needed some naps to keep up with Mrs Richens’ creative pace!) They finished the outside as much as they could and cleaned up before students returned for Term 2, and then spent the next six weekends working on the inside, finishing painting the four big inside branches, making seats and walls, and putting in lights and a ceiling.

Students have been taken on the creative ride with Mrs Richens’ poems – take a look at the photos below to see some of them. Over the last couple of weeks, students have finally got to have some time inside the tree while it has been getting its finishing touches. The many animals and other surprises hidden in its branches make it almost as fun to explore on the outside as it is to enjoy the inside.

We are so grateful to the Mr & Mrs Richens for creating a space that will not only be a hot spot for reading and imagination, but a lasting memory for many students. And while there will no doubt be a few out there thinking how good it might look in your local daycare, Sunday school, or kids club, Mrs Richens has assured us that while they enjoyed the experience, it is a once-in-a-lifetime project!
