Year 11 Drama students took us back to the 16th century to tell a fictional story of William Shakespeare and his muse, Viola. Based on the Oscar-winning film, ‘Shakespeare in Love’ is a play within a play, with students performing scenes from Romeo & Juliet within the wider story of a theatre group being infiltrated by a woman, forbidden at the time.
With pop-outs in the audience, a ‘bit with a dog’ as requested by Queen Elizabeth herself, poison, daggers, bar fights, and death, the audience was kept on their toes. Throw in a good dose of Shakespearean romance – ‘Tell me how you love her Will? Like a sickness and its cure. Like rain and sun, like cold and heat’ – with comedic timing that at moments had the whole house laughing out loud, and under Mr Kite’s direction, the ten students brought together a truly entertaining evening.
