On Friday night, 5th September, Mueller’s Music Extension students had the incredible opportunity to travel to the ABC Studios at Southbank to hear the Queensland Symphony Orchestra perform original works by Queensland’s top young composers. Among them was Mueller College’s own Kaelan Bartlett.
Kaelan was selected as one of only 21 students across the state to take part in this prestigious QSO’s Compose program, where he composed his orchestral piece Baba Yaga, which was brought to life on stage by the Queensland Symphony Orchestra.
Participants in the program throughout the year were challenged to compose orchestral works inspired by the art of contemporary visual artist Arabella Walker, whose pieces depict native Australian animals. Kaelan chose Walker’s Bush Man artwork as his inspiration and collaborated closely with renowned composers Craig Allister Young and Timothy Tate in a series of workshops, refining his orchestral writing and developing his musical ideas.
Composing for a full orchestra is an immense challenge, even for seasoned professionals, and Kaelan’s success in this project is a remarkable achievement that showcases his creativity, skill, and dedication. We are incredibly proud of Kaelan, whose future as a composer shines brightly.
