Introducing Year 12 student, Joshua Holloway, as the boorish villain ‘Gaston’, and Year 11 student, Oliver Kleinschmidt, as the brainless heel ‘Lefou’. Josh and Oliver are having a ball bringing the famous antagonist duo to life. We chatted to them about their experience in the upcoming Secondary musical and what they’re looking forward to about the performances.

What is special about this show?

Josh – A Disney show is always very special, and I feel like we’re all connected to Disney stories. This one is a very joyful show with a great message, so I think that’s what makes it special.

What do you love about your character?

Josh – I love that he’s a villain without a good bone in his body. That’s a lot of fun to articulate and put my own spin on. In my opinion, Gaston has the best songs in the show!

Oliver – I feel like LeFou is a big part of the comedy relief with some fun slapstick aspects that reflect my own personality.

Why should people come to the show?

Josh – You should come because it’s everything you’re expecting and more. It’s such an energetic, uplifting celebration of talent.

Have there been any memorable rehearsal moments?

Oliver – We ‘model-walk’ a lot during rehearsal.

Josh – Any time you forget what you’re doing. Sometimes you laugh it off, and sometimes you cry!

Do you have a favourite moment from the show?

Oliver – Gaston’s death is pretty epic.

Josh – I love the song ‘Me’. Anytime Gaston and LeFou get to evil-laugh is fun.

Do you have any pre-show rituals?

Josh – Lots of prayer! And checking in with everyone backstage because there’s a whole show that goes on back there before the performances.

What excites you about the performances?

Oliver – I’m looking forward to the standing ovation that’s going to happen!
