A couple of weeks ago, several teams of students competed in a local Maths tournament. Over 400 students in Years 7-12 from 28 schools across Moreton Bay gathered to complete a series of fast-paced problems.
The teams had an intense day of competition, with the Year 11-12 team coming in second overall in their age group. One of the introductory activities that the team aced came from Ben Murphy at Murphy Stone Analytics. Each group were given plane flight information, including routes, route costs, route flight times, stopover times and curfews, and then were asked to maximise the possible profit using four aeroplanes, all on different schedules. The Mueller team found $650,000 of profit across their four aircraft and were thrilled to receive a $20 GYG card each as their prize for winning that activity!
Students also had the opportunity to hear from more from Murphy Stone Analytics and QUT Professor Michael Bode, who each brought their own unique challenges and insights to the competition.
