Grief does not follow a straight line. It can catch us off guard, feel heavier on some days than others, and show up in ways we do not always expect; restlessness, sadness, irritability, difficulty concentrating, or simply wanting to withdraw. All of these responses are a natural part of processing loss, and none of them means something is wrong with you.
For our students
You do not have to carry these feelings alone. If you are finding things hard right now, please reach out to someone you trust a parent, friend, a teacher, your Year Level Coordinator, or our school counsellors and chaplains.
Sometimes talking feels too hard. That is okay too. You might find it helpful to:
- Pray and spend some quiet time with God. Meditate on His words in Psalm 46:10 “Be still and know that I am God”.
- Spend time with people who make you feel safe and cared for
- Get outside and move your body even a short walk can help
- Write down your thoughts if talking feels too difficult
- Limit time on social media if you notice it is making you feel worse
If you are feeling overwhelmed or worried about yourself or a friend, please tell a trusted adult. You can also contact Kids Helpline anytime – they are free, confidential, and available 24 hours a day.
For parents and carers
The most important thing you can do for your young person in times of grief is to stay connected. You do not need to have the right words simply being present, listening without judgement, and letting them know you are there makes an enormous difference.
Some practical things that can help:
- Check in regularly: a simple check in at dinner or on the way to school opens the door
- Keep routines: regular meals, sleep, and physical activity provide stability when emotions feel unpredictable
- Eat together: when you can, shared mealtimes are one of the most consistent protective factors for adolescent wellbeing
- Stay available: let your young person know they can come to you at any time, without fear of being a burden
- Watch for changes: if you notice your young person withdrawing significantly, sleeping much more or less than usual, giving away belongings, or talking about not wanting to be here, please seek help immediately
If you are concerned about your child’s wellbeing, please do not wait, speak with your family GP, contact the school counsellors or call one of the services listed below.
