The next pieces in our Beauty and the Beast puzzle are Year 12 student, Charlotte Westaway, as the wholesome castle mother, Mrs Potts, and Year 8 student, Dan Riek, as the playful young teacup ‘Chip’. The mother and son bring a sweetness to the castle family, modelling kindness and unconditional love to the fiery beast.

We chatted to them about their experience in the upcoming Secondary musical and what they’re looking forward to about the performances.

What is special about this show?

Dan – I think what is special is the cast and how everyone has come together and worked so hard.

Charlotte – I think it’s a different interpretation of Beauty and the Beast to what people have seen, and that makes it very special.

What do you love about your character?

Charlotte – I love her loving nature and her motherly-ness – I love that she’s a very warm soul, and she can control the castle with a click of her finger.

Dan – I love Chip’s energy and his funny moments.

Why should people come to the show?

Charlotte – It’s a show that we’ve worked really hard on, and it’s a classic, so they can come and sing along quietly to the songs they know.

Do you have a favourite moment from the show?

Dan – ‘There’s a girl in the castle!’

Charlotte – The ‘kill the beast’ scene is a favourite because the villagers are so passionate and Josh (Gaston) is so good.

Do you have any pre-show rituals?

Dan – Josh and I are planning on pulling everyone together for a jumping circle in intermission to get pumped up!

Which performance should people come to?

Dan – They should come to the matinee – the first show, everybody is a bit nervous, and they’re on stage for the first time, the second show, everyone knows what they’re doing, and the last show, I feel like a lot of people might be crying backstage!

Charlotte – I would say the last show because it’s the seniors’ last time performing, so we’re definitely going to be bringing something special to that one.
