Year 10 student, Amy Hodgkins, recently competed in the Queensland State Golfing Championships and finished with the huge achievement of placing 5th individually in the state. Playing against approximately 15 other teams, Amy’s team came an impressive second overall.
Amy caught a passion for the sport from her older sister and started playing herself at the age of 10. She heads to Royal Queensland, a high development program, for group training twice a week and takes to the local club course at Redcliffe every other day to practice. Her weekends are often spent at competitions and this week she’s participating in the Keperra Bowl where the top 36 open amateurs in Australia are invited to compete. COVID, however, will likely limit this year’s pool to Queenslanders.
Amy hopes to gain a scholarship to play collegiate golf in the US at the end of Year 12 with the goal of eventually playing professionally. When asked what advice she would give to other young people striving towards sporting achievements she said, ‘Be persistant. Don’t look around you too much – worry about your own game and you’ll get there!’
