Year 9, 10 and 11 students studying Chinese had an opportunity to immerse themselves in the culture last week when they took an excursion to Chinese supermarkets, various stores, and a restaurant.

Lunch was a huge highlight with everyone expanding their palettes as they tried pork buns, deep-fried prawn, chicken wraps with lotus leaves, and even chicken feet. While enjoying the food, Year 9 were tasked with interviewing a senior student, conversing in Chinese and using the interaction to write a diary entry in Chinese. Year 10 & 11 set off to do a photo scavenger hunt, identifying different shops with Chinese signage – at Sunnybank Plaza even the Commonwealth Bank has a sign in Chinese.

The shops held plenty of treasure to discover with Chinese lollies like ‘White Rabbit’ and ‘Hello Panda’, and various toys and gadgets not available elsewhere. Bubble tea was a keen favourite, and hotcakes and pastries from the Chinese bakery were snapped up quickly. The group explored different vegetables at the grocery store, taking home some unique chilli’s, and took a walk through the seafood market which was arranged in Chinese tradition.

They had a fantastic day exercising language skills and enriching their cultural experience.
