“Each person is given something to do that shows who God is: Everyone gets in on it, everyone benefits.  All kinds of things are handed out by the Spirit, and to all kinds of people! The variety is wonderful”

1 Corinthians 12: 7 & 8 (The Message)

In a school the size of Mueller it is wonderful to see the high level and diversity of talents within the school.  There are students who can ride horses, sing beautifully, run fast and do amazing things on their computers.  Further to this, and no less importantly, we are blessed with many students who are great friends to one another, serve other people, look after their classmates who are having a bad day and welcome new students to the school.  God promises that he has given each person talents and abilities.  He calls them ‘gifts’.  In the words of 1 Corinthians, ‘everyone gets in on it’!

Behind the scenes we have been doing lot of work this term on preparing for the new QCE system which will be implemented when the current Year Ten students enter Year Eleven in 2019.  There are significant changes to the range and content of the subjects able to be offered and the assessment demands on students.  We have engaged with these changes for a long time now.  They will impact upon the school calendar significantly and there will be new skills and processes that we will need to implement, and that students will need to learn.  However, in all of this we are committed to the holistic education of students, valuing the diversity of learners and providing opportunities for all students to flourish.

Maximising student outcomes whilst at school is a core focus of Mueller College. Just as we have many types of students, we also have many student pathways, all equally viable and valid.

An example of this pathway is Mr Anthony Banks who shared his own educational journey in assembly this week.  He left school in Year Ten and joined the Air Force as a photographer.  Upon leaving the Air Force and becoming a commercial photographer, he simultaneously studied for four years at night school to achieve his High School Certificate and teaching qualifications.  During his 24 years at Mueller he has co-ordinated the PE and Sport department, led the development of the IT subjects before founding MUROC and the aviation department.  He has been an example of ‘lifelong learning’ that we can all follow and aspire to.

Success in school subjects is important but a commitment to developing our gifts and pursuing the opportunities before us is even more valuable.

More information on the new QCE system will be presented at the Subject Selection Night on Wednesday August 1.
