Year 11 and 12 Drama students undertook their first performance of the year in the 2023 Absurdist production last week.

The usual structures of theatre are thrown to the wayside for this genre as it explores pessimism, purposelessness, and futility, sometimes with an injection of humour and frivolity. Students were given the opportunity to tackle their piece from anywhere on the spectrum, from hope to despair, with many choosing to explore the darker perspective. Teachers, Mr Kite & Mr Blackmore, explained that as a Christian school our foundation is firmly footed on the hope Jesus has gifted us, but that very hope stands in tension with the fallen world we have been rescued from. Though some of the themes and imagery of the performance were confronting, they reflect just a small piece of the larger story of redemption that we walk in.

The actors gave hearty performances, throwing themselves into the scenes with full commitment. The intrigued audience travelled from scene to scene, and were the first to make use of the outdoor drama stage in College Square. Well done to all the students for a wonderful night of entertainment!
