Year 9 Geography students are slowly transforming one of the campus gardens as part of their unit studying food security and biomes this term. Student learning is focused on the understanding of what is needed to sustain life, how to ensure there is enough food for the world and how to sustain it for future generations. Part of their assessment is growing a plant and testing the quality of the soil surrounding their plant. Students will test pH acidity; nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium levels; and complete worm counts to determine how healthy their soil is. They will then have to provide a recommendation on how to improve their soil in order to promote their plant’s growth.

The class are enjoying getting their hands dirty and seeing the fruit (or vegies!) of their work as the weeks progress. With beetroot, tomatoes, kale, strawberries, carrots and celery on the go, there is plenty to keep track of. Pop into the garden between D block and K block to see it in progress.
