Year 11 Outdoor Rec students travelled to the Great Sandy National Park at the end of the last term to embark on the annual Survival Camp. The preparation for the adventure was almost as much of a task as the camp, with students using knowledge from the ‘Lightweight Camping’ unit to pack equipment and plan & purchase food for the four days.

The camp itself is designed to push students physically, mentally, and socially, with around 50km of walking/paddling. They do all of this while competing against each other in 3 tribes – somewhat like the TV show ‘Survivor’. Mr Garthe said the group embraced the challenges and took opportunities to work through their weaknesses, develop their talents and, most importantly, refine their character.

The nights were frigid camping alongside the Noosa River, getting down to 4 degrees, but the reward of cold clear nights was beautiful sunny days and clear conditions for paddling through the beautiful everglades. The photos reflect some pretty spectacular sights they saw along the way.
