Year 9 Science students have been learning about plate tectonics and earthquakes. To explore it more practically and with some added fun, they spent some time designing earthquake-proof structures this week.

The ‘designers’ used spaghetti and blue tac to build their structures, with specifications dictating it be a minimum 60cm high, maximum 30cm wide, and limitations on how much of each material they can use by designing within a budget.

Mr Harwin built a ‘shake table’ that mimics an earthquake and students took turns trying to get their structure to hold together for at least 10 seconds. It proved to be a lot harder than it looks! Take a look at their attempts below…
